TESOL CALL-IS is pleased to offer this presentation of The Electronic Village Online: Best of 2019, highlighting outstanding sessions from this year's EVO. Every year, for five weeks in January-February, participants and ESOL experts engage in collaborative, online discussion or hands-on virtual workshops of professional and scholarly benefit. These five-week sessions allow a fuller development of ideas than is possible in convention sessions. EVO sessions are sponsored by a TESOL Interest Section or affiliate, an IATEFL Special Interest Group, or other groups or affiliates, who provide no financial support. You can visit http://evosessions.pbworks.com/ to learn more.

Presenter Biographies



Christine Bauer-Ramazani, Saint Michael's College, Vermont, USA

Christine Bauer-Ramazani, a native German, is  Director of English Language Programs, as well as a teacher and teacher trainer at Saint Michael’s College in Vermont, integrating technology into teaching and learning. Passionate about CALL, she has designed and taught online graduate courses for her college and TESOLco-founded the Electronic Village Online of TESOL, and chaired the CALL-Interest Section of TESOL, receiving the D. Scott Enright Award for service. Publications and presentations include book chapters, articles, international presentations, keynotes, and invited workshops on technology and strategic planning.  

Martha Ramirez,

Universidad de Los Andes, Bogota, Colombia

Martha Ramirez works as a professor at Universidad de Los Andes in Bogotá, Colombia. She is also a freelance consultant supporting schools, universities and language centers in the implementation of flipped learning, in-class flip and growth mindset. She has been flipping her courses for over five years. She is currently engaged in a research group at Universidad de Los Andes and is working on a project on developing growth mindset in public school teachers. Martha has presented in national and international conferences on flipped learning and the in-class flip. Martha is a differentiation strategies specialist from FLGI. She has recently collaborated in writing the book Innovations in Flipping the Language Classroom (2018) by Jeff Mehring and Adrian Leis about Flipping Pronunciation.

Vance Stevens, (vancestev@gmail.com)

Vance Stevens lives in Penang and has produced over 400 podcasts on Learning2gether.net. His publications at http://vancestevens.com/papers/ deal with how students use computers to learn languages, and how teachers learn to teach using technology by engaging in communities of practice and in participatory cultures. His most recent interests involve research into using voice tools with Google Docs to improve feedback to student writing, on teacher perceptions of social media assisted language learning, and into gamification in language learning through 5 years coordinating EVO Minecraft MOOC.

Carmen Medina Garríguez

Dr. Carmen Medina Garríguez, Ph.D., SFHEA. Currently, Foundations Program Coordinator at the Higher Colleges of Technology (DBM). I am an applied linguist and my Ph.D. is on language and culture. I was a Fulbright exchange teacher in 2001. I love to study, research and teach online. I am a lifelong learner.

Lana Hiasat

Dr. Lana Hiasat is the General Studies Program Coordinator and full-time faculty. Drawing on her background of cultural diversity, training in emotional intelligence, creativity, and intercultural understanding, Lana offers unique insights into educational leadership, cultural inclusion, and integration of technology. Her research interests are in blended learning, educational technologies, teaching and learning best practices. 

Roslyn Billy

Dr. Roslyn Billy’s educational background consists of a BA in Liberal Arts with a concentration in Philosophy and Religion, an M.A.Ed. in Leadership in Teaching with a concentration in TESOL, (both from College of Notre Dame of Maryland) and a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction (Capella University). M.A.Ed. in Leadership in Teaching with a concentration in TESOL, (both from College of Notre Dame of Maryland) and a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction (Capella University).


Jane Chien, National Taipei University of Education, ychien@gmail.com


Dr. Jane Chien is an assistant professor of TEFL and has been on the faculty of Children English Education, National Taipei University of Education since 2005. This year is her third year participating in the Minecraft MOOC community. She has served as one of the co-moderators of EVO Minecraft MOOC since 2017 and has served on the coordination team of TESOL CALL-IS Electronic Village Online starting last year. Her areas of interest include EFL elementary school teacher training, differentiated instruction, EFL curriculum design, and game-based learning.

Juliana Díaz,

Institución Universitaria Colombo Americana

Juliana Díaz works as a full-time professor at Institución Universitaria Colombo Americana - UNICA. She is also the coordinator of the area of Continuing Education at the same institution. She has been teaching for 9 years and flipping for her face-to-face courses at this university for 4 years. Her research interests are Flipped Learning methodology, writing process and autonomy. She has recently collaborated in writing the book Innovations in Flipping the Language Classroom (2018) by Jeff Mehring and Adrian Leis about Flipping Writing Workshops. In 2015 she won a BETT LATAM Leadership Summit award with the project: “Flipping English learning, improving our 21st Century Colombian learners’ outcomes through technology and autonomy” with Carolina R. Buitrago.
José Antônio da Silva José Antônio da Silva is an EFL teacher living in Brasilia, Brazil. Has been a co-moderator in EVO since 2008. In 2013, joined the EVO Coordination Team. Has been teaching English for more 26 years and loves what he does. In his classes, he always tries to use ICT tools in a way that encourages students to use language meaningfully.

Judy Wong,

PACE University

Judy Wong is a native New Yorker who is a visual & performing artist, a writer and an English teacher to speakers of other languages. She is an Adjunct Faculty member at PACE University in New York City, USA, she promotes literacy as a reader in the NYC Public School and she is an advisory board member of EFLtalks (online EFL teachers' teaching teachers webinar group). Judy has taught 3-80 yrs old students dance, acting, elocution, academics through the arts as a guest artist and English. Ever passionate, currently she is combining her two passions (theater arts and English teaching) to work on bringing together a forward-thinking group of artists and educators to develop new original culturally relevant theater for ELL (English Language Learner) audiences. Judy holds a BS in Liberal Arts /Teaching Academics through the Arts and an MA in TESOL from the New School University in NYC, USA.

Maha Hassan is an Educational Consultant, Teacher Trainer and Founder/Ceo of Teaching ESL Hub (formerly Maha ESL Community). She has presented at a number of International Conferences including IATEFL, Tesol International Convention-CALL IS EVO,  K12 Online Conference, TD SIG IATEFL, Nile Tesol, LIF (Language in Focus), Tesol Arabia, Global Education Online Conference as well as at Reinventing the Classroom, Learning Revolution Online Conferences, MMCV7 & 8, CO18 and MMVC18.  She also had a number of papers published on IATEFL Voices, Pilgrims “A New Contribution to Bloom’s Taxonomy”, HEIS International Tesol Newsletter, Nile Tesol Newsletter, and Howtolearn.com. Daniela Cuccurullo,

University of Naples

Daniela Cuccurullo is TESOL Italy second Vice President. Contract Professor of English and of didactics and multimedia teaching at the University of Naples, School teacher of English, teacher trainer, e-tutor, forum moderator and author of digital contents. Engaged in research on teaching English as a second language through multimedia and CALL/MALL/MALU, she has presented papers at national and international conferences and is the author of essays on didactics and English literature, reviews and translations. She has planned, coordinated and taught CLIL courses at International, national and local levels. 

Letizia Cinganotto,

the Italian Institute for Documentation, Innovation, Educational Research 

PhD, Researcher at the Italian Institute for Documentation, Innovation, Educational Research.

A former teacher of English, teacher trainer and author of digital contents. She worked for several years at the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research, dealing with issues relating to the Upper Secondary School Reform, with a particular focus on foreign languages and on CLIL. She has presented papers at national and international conferences and published articles and chapters in national and international peer-reviewed journals and an e-book in English with Daniela Cuccurullo.
